Understanding terms: Individual Health Insurance

Premium: The monthly fee for an individual health insurance plan
Copay: A payment made by the insured person at the time a medical service is performed. Copayments typically go toward the out of pocket maximum of the individual health insurance plan.

Deductible: The amount the insured individual must pay out of his/her pocket before the insurer (the health insurance company) pays for any expenses. Most individual health insurance plans have a varying range of deductible options.

Coinsurance: The percentage the insured individual must pay for medical care after the deductible. This cost is split with the insurer (the health insurance company).
Out of Pocket maximums: This is the highest amount the insured individual would be required to pay annually for medical coverage.

Prescription Copay’s: A payment that must be made for a prescription drug. Typically, prescription copay’s are a fraction of the actual cost of the prescription drug.
